Introduction
The Panchayat is an indispensable component of an Indian political system.’Panchayat’ literally means assembly (yat) of five (panch) wise and respected elders chosen and accepted by the village community. Traditionally, these assemblies settled disputes between individuals and villages. Modern Indian government has decentralized several administrative functions to the village level, empowering elected gram panchayats.
Functions of the Department
- To help and guide the Panchayati Raj Institutions at all three levels i.e. Zila Parishad at District Level, Panchayat Samiti at Block Level and Gram Panchayat at Village Level in their functioning empowered under Haryana Panchayati Raj Act and Rules.
- To provide funds to the Panchayati Raj Institutions for development works in villages.
- To impart training to the members of Panchayati Raj Institutions.
